Pre Conference Seminar on Economics and Environmental Crisis in the Islamic Perspective

The interaction between economics and environmental crisis has been increasingly acknowledged by numerous scholars. Capitalism, a dominant economic system in the present world, is accused as one of the main causes of environmental degradation. While environmental crisis is a dramatic, unexpected, and irreversible worsening of the environment leading to signicant welfare losses.

Accordingly, we are required to set up a systemic and holistic approach for better understanding on the reciprocal relationship between economics and environmental. Islam as a religion and civilization has its own principles and teachings on economics and environmental issues.

One of the challenge as the cause of capitalistic economic is the rapid exploitation to the natural resource that can cause the earth imbalance, increasing the carrying capacity, carbon foot print as well as degradation of nature. This critical condition is a crisis the might overcome difficulty to the future of life and humanity and human mission as khalifah on earth as well as taking care the planet earth as an ‘amanah due to the limitation of resources and the imbalance of nature.

Objectives

1. To delineate the dynamic and necessary interaction between economics and environmental condition.
2. To explore the causal factors of the environmental degradation and ecological crises in the view of economics.
3. To encourage the role of Islamic teachings in facing both financial crisis and environmental crisis at the present world.
